About Maine Locavore

It is our goal to create an easy-to-use website that connects the people of Maine with the farms in Maine. Our website features over 200 Farm Profiles updated and maintained by Maine Locavore and the Farmers themselves.

We are a free tool for all farmers in the state of Maine. By allowing farmers the ability to maintain their own Farm Profiles we hope to ease the burden of maintaining an up-to-date website.

Our goals include:

  • Benefit Maine farmers
  • Be free to Maine farmers
  • Be an aid to green practices, heirloom varieties, and ethical farming methods
  • Be a tool for consumers to find local produce and livestock

Using Our Website:

Maine Locavore is centered around the “Farm Profile”. A Farm Profile is a page that outlines a particular farm. We put the Farm Profile front and center. Every search and filter is based around the Farm Profile. Whether you start by searching for tomatoes or pork you will end up with a list of Farm Profiles that have that product. Furthermore you can filter your search by county to narrow down the farms to a specific region.

Start by using the navigation on the left side of the page under “Local Selections”.

Terminology:

Farm Profile — A Farm Profile is a page that outlines a particular farm. Farm Profiles include what the farms produce, where you can buy it, and how you can contact the farm.

Pick-Your-Own — Pick-your-own indicates the farms that allow you to visit the farm and hand pick produce.

CSA — CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. This is a great way for farmers to sustain their business and get quality product into the hands of the consumers. Usually farms offer a certain number of CSAs per season, so be sure to get in early! Farms on our website listed under CSAs offer CSAs to the public. Please contact the farm to inquire.

Our icons and what they mean:

We use the leaf to specify which Farm Profiles are organic. We do our best to ensure that all farms labeled organic are in fact certified organic. it is possible farms listed as organic are not currently certified. To ensure the farms are certified please check MOFGA.

We love our Farm Profiles. We use this icon to specify that the button leads to a Farm Profile. Farm Profiles are pages that are either kept up by the farmers themselves or by Maine Locavore.
